Measuring “correctly” with the Stringway Stringlab 2

With the SL2, there are many “correct” ways to measure. Unfortunately, most people measure incorrectly, leading to inaccurate and inconsistent results.

Here, I’ll suggest two methods for proper measurement. The first method uses my own solution, which requires new parts. You can also measure accurately with the original parts, but it’s much more cumbersome because, while well-intentioned, they weren’t well-executed.

You can find more detailed background on why the original parts aren’t optimal here:

And you can get the new parts here:

Method 1: With modified plates

  1. Turn the device on.
  2. Turn off the lock function with a longer push on the tare button.
  3. Place the thread of the SL2 under the 9th cross string (on a racket with 19 or 20 crosses) without the thread touching a string.
  4. Put the plate with the washer upside on the thread. The notch should point upwards to the head of the frame.
  5. Put the plate with the nut downside on the thread. Screw it on just a little.
    The display should show ~-0,05.
  6. Then press the tare button (display should show ~-0,05).
  7. Screw it tight until you have a small resistance, then screw it loose again until the display shows 0.
  8. Push the lever to the middle position.
  9. Loose the plate with the screw until the display shows 10,00 (+/-0,05).
  10. When the display shows 10.00 (+/-0,05)
    1. Push the tare button longer to enable the lock function again.
    2. Push it a second time to tare the value.
  11. Push the lever to the end position and wait until the result on the display is locked.
  12. Now you have a more or less repeatable value.

If you want to measure twice, then wait a few minutes between the measurements.
